Brooklyn, New York, October 10, 2017 – RiseAD announces the release of its latest collaboration with world-renowned Jazz musician and painter Dick Griffin. On October 10th, RiseAInD will release a new collection of sunglasses inspired by two original Griffin paintings — Underground Monk & Round Midnight, as a tribute to the renowned jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk on the anniversary of his birthday. Also included in the collection are 2 additional designs Brooklyn and Reflections named after other Griffin paintings.
Through these works of art, Griffin pays homage to Thelonious Monk, who Griffin had the pleasure of sharing a stage, as well as having a personal relationship with during the last years of Monk’s performing career from 1967 until he stopped performing in public. As Griffin explains it, “He was like a father figure to me. His group and the group that I was working with, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, would share the stage at the Village Vanguard. I would hang out with him in the kitchen between sets.
Griffin’s tribute paintings is available to see during the opening of a group exhibit entitled Reflections of Monk at Kenkeleba Gallery at 214 East 2nd Street from October 8th to November 18th.
The Legendary Jazz Trombonist, who resides in NYC, has played with luminaries such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Hilton Ruiz, Tito Puente, and Sun Ra who Griffin first played with at the age of 19 years old. Griffin is also a painter, whose works are part of private and corporate collections around the world. Like his music, Griffin’s paintings are influenced from his experiences in music, which has taken him around the world.
The RiseAD x Dick Griffin sunglasses collection includes a curated version of Griffin’s paintings with the artist’s deep, rich colors infused into RiseAD’s eyewear frames. Each one of the pairs in the collection, similar to the brand’s other collections, is made individually, making each pair distinctive.
Griffin says, “When you hear me play, what I put out there is what I’ve experienced; and when I paint, I put the same thing on canvas-in a different way. My art is a reflection of my life coming up in the segregated south. I tell the stories on my canvas and with the colors in my paint”.
