PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (June 30, 2009) – Davis Vision, Inc., a Highmark Company, donated 5,000 new eyeglass frames to VOSH International this month to benefit their Nicaraguan mission. VOSH – Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity – is a nonprofit group that provides eyewear and eye care services to areas in need around the world.
The frames that Davis Vision has provided will be used overseas to benefit a new eye clinic. The nonprofit clinic opens July 1 in Managua, Nicaragua and will provide vision care at the lowest possible expense, as well as free eyewear to the poorest patients. The 5,000 donated frames help make this service possible.
“Davis Vision’s generous donation allows us to keep our clinic operating expenses as low as possible,” said Dr. Greg Pearl, president-elect of VOSH International. The organization is partnering with Nicaraguan ophthalmologists and working to keep the clinic open six days a week.
Preventive and corrective care is imperative for vision health; however an eye exam and single pair of glasses can cost hundreds of dollars. VOSH’s clinic will not only provide Nicaraguans with access to proper care at a reduced rate, but through donations like the one from Davis Vision, it will also provide materials that correct vision problems and prevent future problems.
Laura Dyer, Davis Vision’s assistant vice president, community outreach & media relations, said, “We are pleased to support VOSH’s mission and hope to build on our relationship to spread awareness and bring quality eye care to those in need.”
