Golden, CO, October 6, 2011: Optos is participating in the World Sight Day ‘Company’ Challenge by making a donation to Optometry Giving Sight for each Optomap retinal screening image taken globally on World Sight Day, October 13.
“As a global company focused on protecting eyesight, Optos is proud to help raise awareness about preventing blindness by participating in the World Sight Day ‘Company’ Challenge,” said Roy Davis, Chief Executive Officer of Optos. “Routine eye exams, including a thorough screening of the retina using Optomap images, are important to maintaining vision with early detection of eye disease. We are pleased to make this donation to help underserved communities worldwide access sustainable eye care.”
The Chair of Optometry Giving Sight, Mary Anne Murphy, OD, said she was greatly encouraged by Optos’ support of the World Sight Day ‘Company’ Challenge. “We are so grateful for this generous donation provided by Optos.
With the help of Optos, and other companies and practitioners who have signed up for the World Sight Day Challenge, Optometry Giving Sight is funding sustainable vision care programs worldwide and bringing the gift of vision to those most in need,” she said.
Optomap is a screening tool for the early detection of disease or abnormalities in the posterior segment of the eye. An Optomap scan is a painless and non-invasive method of determining retinal health; the scan creates high definition, digital images of the retina that are viewed by practitioners, and their patients, during an exam. The Optomap scan is useful technology when diagnosing immediate retinal problems and also serves as a baseline tool with future exams to determine if any retinal changes have occurred. When compared with ophthalmoscopy, Optomap allows practitioners to view large, full images of the retina as opposed to viewing only a small portion of the retina with an ophthalmoscope.
