OptiCote Celebrates 40 Years Of Business

This year marks Opticote Inc.’s 40th year in business. An independent lens coatings company, Opticote is still owned by the same family. Don Ellefsen set up the company in 1972 and in 1991 Don’s eldest son Ed took over the business from his father. He also relocated the company from downtown Chicago to an 18,000-sq.-ft. space in Franklin Park, IL. “Being a small niche firm, we’ve gone with the flow of changes in the industry,” said Michael Bellomo, director of sales and marketing at Opticote. “We’ve stayed flexible and we’ve stayed ahead of some of the changes as they relate to coating,” he added.

Opticote often acts as a backup to the major eyewear labs if their equipment fails.”We have the capacity here and we can turn the work around quickly. Nine coatings can be requested from us and they can be in and out the same day,” he added. In fact, Opticote prides itself on its fast turnaround times. As of December 2011, it had achieved a 97.9% rate of on-time delivery.
